My First long Backpacking trip was to Australia from September 2005 to September 2006 when I was only 21 years old, I had never done any solo travel before this but it was a huge experience for me and nurtured my love of travelling tho maybe I was drinking a bit more back then!. I was doing the typical working holiday travelling up and down the east coast of Australia.
I spent the majority of my time based in Brisbane where I had good group of friends and was a good base for going to Byron Bay or Surfers Paradise for a few days if I wanted. One of my favorite places to visit was Fraser Island which is just on the coast slightly north of Brisbane. Fraser Island is a huge sand island where you can go camping for a few days and do 4 wheel driving tours to different sights across the island such as the crystal clear lagoons and rain forests.
I also spent a bit of time in the Whitsunday Island just off the coast of Northern Queensland very close to the Great Barrier Reef. These island really are a beautiful part of the world with crystal clear waters and beaches whiter than any other in the world.
I spent a great deal of time in Sydney especially around Christmas and New Year as I have some family there which was great, its a huge city with everything on offer. The main thing I loved about sydney was the food, it really is a cultural melting pot which a huge asian influence. One of the culinary delights I discovered during my time was Malaysian Laksa which is something I try to eat every now and again. The down side of Sydney is that it is very busy and I found it just not quite as laid back as Brisbane in the North.
One of the place I never managed to make it to was Tasmania so I will definitely have to get back one day to Visit!
